What is Dermatology?

Dermatology is the specialty field of medicine that diagnoses and treats diseases of the skin, hair, nails, and adjacent mucous membranes. The skin, being the largest organ of the body, can present with over 2,000 diseases and manifestations of diseases such as skin cancer, psoriasis, eczema, among others.

What is a Dermatologist?

A Dermatologist is a doctor specializing in dermatology. In the Philippines, a dermatologist must complete medical school, a 3-year residency training in dermatology approved by the Philippine Dermatological Society, and the diplomate examination by the Philippine Board of Dermatology. In the United States, a board-certified dermatologist is part of the American Academy of Dermatology.

What is Dermatologic Surgery?

Dermatologic Surgery is the subspecialty that uses surgical and procedural techniques to treat conditions of the hair, skin, and nails. Dermatologic surgeons field treats pathologic conditions such as skin cancer and hair loss, as well as cosmetic conditions such as skin laxity, hyperpigmentation, and scars using both invasive and non-invasive techniques.

In the Philippines, the Philippine Academy of Dermatologic Surgery Foundation, Inc., of which Dr. Imelda Cervantes is a founding member and currently on the Board of Trustees, is the dermatologic surgery society dedicated to the advancement and education of dermatologic surgery education and training in the country.
